Sheryl Lee Ralph Urges Caution as Hurricane Beryl Approaches Jamaica
Sheryl Lee Ralph is urging those living in Jamaica to exercise caution as Hurricane Beryl approaches the Caribbean. The Abbott Elementary star shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) early Wednesday morning, discussing preparations for the category 4 storm. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Beryl is anticipated to bring “hurricane conditions to Jamaica by mid-day today with life-threatening winds and storm surge.”
“From the looks of the sky, it looks like Beryl is gonna be here much sooner than the news keeps saying,” Ralph mentioned in the clip. “It’s very calm here in Jamaica. The sky is so beautifully clear and they said that the sea looked like glass today.”
Ralph also shared some of the measures she has taken to stay safe. “We had to take in all of the outside furniture because, you know, those things take flight,” she explained. “I just wanted to say to everybody: please stay inside. There’s a curfew starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. Stay off the road in Kingston. I hope you’ve put oil in your lamp and are taking extra care.”
She continued, “To everybody that’s here, on island, we remember that Gilbert was a [category] three, and Beryl is a four. Wow. God bless you. Goodnight. Power up.” Ralph referred to Hurricane Gilbert, a significant storm that impacted much of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico in 1988.
Ralph captioned her post: “Good night from Jamaica. Pray for us as you pray for others.”
A hurricane warning is in effect for Jamaica and the Cayman Islands as of Wednesday morning. The U.S. National Hurricane Center reports that Hurricane Beryl is “forecast to be at or near major hurricane intensity while it passes near Jamaica later today,” with winds expected to reach “tropical storm strength” and “storm surge could raise water levels by as much as 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels along the immediate coast of Jamaica.”
