Angel Reese Surprises Her Mom by Paying Off Her Mortgage on Her Birthday
Angel Reese recently made her mother’s birthday unforgettable with a heartfelt surprise. On January 30, the Chicago Sky star, 22, invited her mom, Angel Webb Reese—affectionately known as “Mama Angel”—to her YouTube show, Unapologetically Angel. The two spent nearly an hour discussing Reese’s basketball journey and rise to fame before the big reveal.
Reese acknowledged her mom’s birthday as a cake was brought out, then shared an incredible surprise. “Before we sing ‘Happy Birthday,’ you said that if your mortgage was paid off, you would retire or stop working,” Reese told her. “Well, today, your mortgage has been paid.”
Overcome with shock, her mother nearly dropped the cake before an assistant took it. Struggling for words, she asked in disbelief, “Are you serious?” Reese reassured her that the mortgage was officially taken care of, thanks to the help of Jamel and Janine. She also let her mom know that she could stay with her anytime since Reese plans to buy a house in Chicago this year. The emotional moment brought Mama Angel to tears.
The crew joined in singing “Happy Birthday,” though they couldn’t light the candles due to studio safety rules. Reese expressed how fulfilling this gesture was for her, stating, “That was my biggest goal in life—to retire you and pay your mortgage so you wouldn’t have to work.” She praised her mother’s independence, adding, “You never needed me for money.”
Earlier, Mama Angel had received a Four Seasons gift card, which she thought was her main present. Reese playfully teased, “Now you know I come harder than that.”
This heartwarming celebration came shortly after Reese made history by partnering with McDonald’s as their first female athlete to have a special meal. Reflecting on her childhood, she shared that she and her brother, Julian, often “fought over Happy Meal toys” and that she would save money to enjoy McDonald’s despite her parents encouraging home-cooked meals.
Reese, who was selected as the 7th pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky, has built a strong brand beyond basketball. While she hasn’t publicly disclosed her net worth, reports indicate she earned around $1.7 million from endorsements between 2022 and 2023, securing deals with major brands like Reebok, PlayStation, and Amazon.
