Olympic Swimmer Ryan Murphy and Wife Bridget Welcome Their First Child, Eevi Lillian Murphy
Olympic swimmer Ryan Murphy and his wife, Bridget Konttinen Murphy, recently welcomed their first child!
The couple shared on Wednesday, January 29, that their daughter, Eevi Lillian Murphy, was born on Friday, January 24. She weighed 9 pounds, 8 ounces, and measured 22 inches long.
Ryan, a nine-time Olympic medalist, and Bridget posted a heartfelt Instagram carousel featuring five photos of their newborn. The caption read, “Family of 3,” and they explained that Eevi’s name, of Finnish origin, means “life.” One of the images showed Eevi peacefully sleeping while holding both of her parents’ hands. Another captured Bridget cradling her in the hospital bed while Ryan leaned in for a kiss. The couple also included a sweet picture of Eevi wrapped in a pink blanket and another of her awake in her car seat. The final photo featured Bridget holding their daughter while resting in her hospital bed.
Friends and fellow Olympic swimmers congratulated the couple in the comments. Abbey Weitzeil wrote, “Eevi 🥹, she’s beautiful congrats you guys!!🩷.” Olivia Smoliga added, “Congratulations 🥹👼🤍.” Katie McLaughlin commented, “Congratulations!! She’s so precious 💕💕.” Meghan Dressel, wife of Olympian Caeleb Dressel, shared, “Congratulations Mom and Dad🥹. She is so perfect 🤍✨.”
The couple had announced they were expecting a daughter in a memorable way at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Right after Ryan won a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke on July 29, Bridget surprised him from the stands with a handwritten sign that read, “Ryan, it’s a girl!” They later shared a heartfelt moment, embracing and celebrating together.
Ryan’s mother, Katy, later revealed that the reveal was a last-minute idea. “She had this idea and ran it by all of us, and we were like, ‘Heck, yeah!’ They had been waiting to open that little slip of paper, and that’s how it all happened,” she told PEOPLE.
In a February 2024 interview, Ryan credited Bridget for playing a significant role in his success. “She’s been a huge part of my success over the past couple of years,” he said. “She’s someone who definitely gets me motivated about life.”
