Marvel Reveals “Fantastic Four” Details at San Diego Comic-Con
Marvel’s First Family assembled at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday evening, where attendees in Hall H were treated to a concept reel for the first “Fantastic Four” film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Matt Shakman introduced the reel, unveiling the title “The Fantastic 4: First Steps” and showcasing a Space Age aesthetic.
“We’re doing a retro-future ’60s. Syd Mead was an inspiration. The ’60s, to me, is all about optimism,” Shakman told the audience, elaborating on the film’s period setting. “I love the Fantastic Four. I love their power set. We want to be true to the comics but we want to be true to life.”
The footage, designed like a news reel, featured scenes such as Mr. Fantastic addressing a classroom, the team’s flying Fantasticar, space suits, a rocket launch, and the Thing on a dating show. The sequence concluded with a shot of the film’s villain, Galactus.
Michael Giacchino, known for his work on “Up” and “Lost,” will compose the score for “First Steps.” Production is set to begin soon, with the cast and crew heading back to the U.K.
The all-star cast includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (The Thing). Julia Garner will play the Silver Surfer, Ralph Ineson is cast as Galactus, and Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and John Malkovich have undisclosed roles.
Pascal, reflecting on joining the MCU, shared a personal connection with Shakman: “New family. Nobody knows that Matt and I have known each other for 25 years. We had the same manager, and he almost became my roommate in 1999 until he saw the place and he said, ‘nevermind.’”
The “Fantastic Four” franchise has had a tumultuous history on the big screen. The first attempt in 1994 was scrapped despite a press tour. Fox’s two movies in the 2000s were commercially successful but critically panned, followed by a widely criticized reboot in 2015.
“Fantastic Four” is set to release on July 25, 2025.
