Cher’s Surreal Evening with Jackie Kennedy at 19: ‘She Reminded Me of My Mom’
Cher’s Magical Night with Jacqueline Kennedy
Cher recounts a remarkable evening she spent with Jacqueline Kennedy in her memoir Cher: The Memoir, Part One. This event took place in late 1965 when Cher, then 19, and her husband, Sonny Bono, were invited to a high-society gathering at the Waldorf Astoria Towers in New York City. The hosts, millionaire Charles Engelhard and his wife Jane, were surprised when Kennedy, the guest of honor, specifically requested Sonny and Cher to perform.
Although initially nervous, Cher and Sonny prepared a set with their band, despite having just one rehearsal. The performance was unconventional for them, as it took place in a small living room rather than their usual large arenas. The intimate audience consisted of just 20 guests.
After their performance, Cher and Sonny were briefly sent away but later returned to join the party. As the evening unfolded, Cher found herself following the other women into a grand bedroom. There, she had a peculiar interaction with an older guest before sitting beside Kennedy. At 36, Kennedy exuded a poised elegance that reminded Cher of her mother. Feeling nervous, Cher asked about Kennedy’s children, Caroline and John Jr., who were still coping with their father’s tragic assassination two years earlier. Kennedy warmly responded that they loved “I Got You Babe” and enjoyed singing along to it.
Kennedy’s kindness and grace put Cher at ease during the evening. Cher recalls Sonny gifting Kennedy two saint medals for her children, which Kennedy, a woman of faith, genuinely appreciated. The former first lady even complimented Sonny on his Shakespearean-like haircut, further charming him. Reflecting on the evening, Cher remembers Kennedy as sweet, gracious, and effortlessly elegant.
