Lindsey Vonn Announces Return to Competitive Skiing After Knee Replacement Surgery
Lindsey Vonn is making a surprise return to competitive skiing after retiring in 2019 due to injuries. The Olympic skier, now 40, shared with The New York Times that she’s rejoining the U.S. ski team after a successful knee replacement surgery, allowing her to ski pain-free for the first time in years.
“I had a smile so wide it was coming through the back of my helmet,” Vonn said of her first time back on the slopes, adding that this unexpected comeback has been “amazing.” Her sights are set on the World Cup circuit this winter, though she’s taking things one step at a time.
“I’m trying not to get too far ahead of myself,” Vonn explained, noting that while she has aspirations of racing again, she’s focused on enjoying the process. “I wouldn’t be back on the U.S. ski team if I didn’t have intentions.”
Vonn initially retired after the 2018-2019 season, citing injuries that had become too severe to compete at her best. In her retirement message, she expressed peace with her achievements, including her 82 World Cup wins, close to Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86. Though she didn’t surpass that number, she reflected proudly on her career, saying she had accomplished more than she’d ever imagined.
Now, after a break and successful surgery, Vonn is excited to see what she can accomplish in her return to the sport she loves.
