Mom Explains Why She Canceled Christmas for Her 5-Year-Old Daughter
A TikTok mom, Mele (@melez907), shared why she decided to cancel Christmas for her 5-year-old daughter due to persistent behavioral issues. In a series of videos, Mele explained that the decision came after a detailed email from her daughter’s teacher describing the behavior as “very atrocious.”
Despite earlier efforts, such as discussions and activities like Elf on the Shelf, the behavior didn’t improve. After receiving the email, Mele removed the Christmas tree and sent their elf “back home.” She explained to her daughter that there would be no Christmas at their house for her this year, although other family members, like her grandmother, might still give her gifts.
Mele clarified that her 11-year-old son, who knows the truth about Santa, would still enjoy Christmas as usual. Addressing criticism, she said, as both a parent and educator, she believes in logical consequences. Mele emphasized that Christmas is a privilege, not an entitlement, especially after her daughter had a great birthday celebration in November.
The reaction was mixed. While some thought the punishment was too harsh, others praised her approach to parenting. One commenter noted, “THIS is parenting. That child learned mama does NOT play.” Another added, “I got coal when I was 7 and never forgot that feeling—never lost a Christmas again!”
