Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise: New Projects with Margot Robbie and Reboot in the Works

Over the past few years, there have been numerous discussions surrounding the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Speculation has ranged from talks of a complete reboot with a fresh cast to the potential development of a female-centric installment starring Margot Robbie.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that both projects are in the works. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer clarified, “It’s two different movies. We hope to get them both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”

Jeff Nathanson has been tasked with writing the script for the reboot, while Christina Hodson is handling the script for the Margot Robbie-led film. The story for the reboot was developed by Craig Mazin, creator of The Last of Us, in collaboration with original Pirates of the Caribbean screenwriter Ted Elliot. However, due to setbacks such as Hollywood strikes, Nathanson is now reported to be focusing on the script.

In a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Margot Robbie revealed, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

Regarding the potential involvement of Johnny Depp, Bruckheimer acknowledged his admiration for the actor but stated that the new films will feature fresh faces. “I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack,” Bruckheimer remarked. However, he didn’t completely rule out the possibility of Depp’s return.
