Rebecca Yarros Speaks Out Against Book Censorship
Rebecca Yarros, bestselling author of 25 books, including the wildly popular Fourth Wing, is a firm believer in free access to books and open discussions about content. Despite facing challenges like social media backlash and even death threats that forced her family to move, Yarros, 43, remains steadfast in her stance against censorship and book bans.
With her husband Jason, 44, she is raising six children, aged 11 to 27. Yarros acknowledges the difficulty of keeping tabs on everything her kids consume. “Anyone who says they know exactly what their teenager is doing is either lying or in denial,” she told PEOPLE. She stresses the importance of striking a balance between parental guidance and respecting her children’s autonomy. “At some point, you have to say, ‘We’ve raised this human, and they are a person with their own boundaries, thoughts, and feelings.’ Whether or not they align with mine, they have a right to explore certain content.”
In her household, open conversations about social media, books, and the messages they carry are a priority. Yarros emphasizes the importance of critically discussing media rather than banning it. “We talk a lot about censorship here,” she says. “I’ve always believed that if you have an issue with what your kid is reading, you should read it with them and have a conversation about it.”
She also defers to professionals when it comes to determining what belongs in libraries and classrooms, saying, “I’m not a librarian. I don’t have that expertise.” She firmly believes that no one should dictate what other people’s children can access, adding, “Free access to information is always the best choice.”
Yarros’ hit novel Fourth Wing, which sold over 2 million copies and became a social media sensation in 2023, brought her into the spotlight not only as an author but also as a voice for readers’ rights. Despite the controversies, Yarros continues to advocate for open-mindedness and meaningful dialogue about literature.
