Designer Virginie Viard is leaving Chanel

Virginie Viard is stepping down from Chanel after five years as the artistic director of fashion collections for the French luxury house. She assumed the position after the passing of Karl Lagerfeld in 2019, following many years of collaboration with him at Chanel. She succeeded Lagerfeld, who, along with Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel herself, had previously held the prestigious role of artistic director at the brand.

Chanel confirmed Viard’s departure in a press statement, acknowledging her efforts in revitalizing the brand’s codes while honoring its creative legacy. Viard, who has been with Chanel since 1987, worked closely with Lagerfeld for decades, earning praise as his deputy. Her appointment in 2019 was seen as a natural continuation of Chanel’s legacy.

The brand has yet to announce Viard’s successor, but expressed gratitude for her significant contributions to Chanel’s fashion and growth. Under Viard’s leadership, Chanel’s fashion business saw substantial growth, with earnings rising to $19.7 billion in 2023.

The departure of Viard follows a trend of high-profile moves in the fashion industry, including Pierpaolo Piccioli leaving Valentino and Sarah Burton stepping down from Alexander McQueen. Speculation surrounds who will fill Viard’s shoes as Chanel prepares for a runway show during Paris Haute Couture week, which is believed to feature Viard’s final collection for the brand.
