Djokovic and Nadal Set for Potential Early Showdown at Olympic Tennis Event
Paris 2024 Olympics preview
Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are on track for an early-round clash at the Olympic Tennis Event, as revealed by the draw on Thursday.
The two rivals, who have met 59 times in their Lexus ATP head-to-head series, could face each other in the second round. Top-seeded Djokovic will start against Australia’s Matthew Ebden, while unseeded Nadal will play Hungarian Marton Fucsovics in the first round. Djokovic leads their series 30-29, but Nadal won their only Olympic meeting in the 2008 Beijing semi-finals and went on to win the title. Nadal also has a strong record against Djokovic at Roland Garros, winning eight out of their ten encounters there, including their most recent match in the 2022 quarter-finals.
Two-time Olympic singles gold medallist Andy Murray has withdrawn from the singles competition but will compete in doubles with Daniel Evans.
Second seed Carlos Alcaraz will face Lebanon’s Hady Habib in his opening match. The winner will then face either Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor or Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the second round.
Defending champion and third seed Alexander Zverev will play Spain’s Jaume Munar in the first round.
The doubles draw, also released on Thursday, has Nadal and Alcaraz set to compete against the sixth-seeded Argentine pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.
The Olympic Tennis Event starts on Saturday and concludes on Sunday, August 4.
