Kate McKinnon Teases Possible Return for SNL’s 50th Season
It’s a cold world without Kate McKinnon on Saturday Night Live (SNL), but there’s a chance things could heat up again. The beloved alum recently expressed her interest in returning to the iconic sketch show for its historic 50th season, which kicked off this past weekend.
During an appearance on the Today show, McKinnon hinted at a potential comeback when host Savannah Guthrie asked if she could be convinced to return for the milestone season. McKinnon smiled and replied, “You know, I still do live in New York. It’s not too far of a train ride,” before enthusiastically adding, “Yeah, I’d love to come back.”
McKinnon, who starred on SNL for 11 seasons from 2012 to 2022, is one of the most beloved cast members in recent years. She’s known for her spot-on political impersonations and unforgettable characters like Debette Goldry and Colleen Rafferty. In fact, she’s the only cast member from the past decade to land in the top 10 of Entertainment Weekly’s ranking of the best SNL cast members.
Since leaving the show, McKinnon has successfully maintained a vibrant career in film and television. One of her most notable post-SNL appearances was in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie, cementing her status as a prominent figure in entertainment. Fans are excited about the possibility of her returning for SNL’s semicentennial.
The premiere of SNL’s 50th season, hosted by Jean Smart with musical guest Jelly Roll, also featured appearances from former cast members like Maya Rudolph, Dana Carvey, and Andy Samberg. Alongside the show’s return, Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night—a movie detailing the origins of SNL—debuted in select theaters, with a wider release slated for October 11.
NBC has already revealed the hosts and musical guests for the first five episodes of the new season, including names like John Mulaney, Michael Keaton, Ariana Grande, and Chappell Roan. Given the star-studded start, viewers can expect a thrilling season, with a chance for McKinnon to make a return ahead of the official 50th-anniversary special, a three-hour retrospective airing on February 16.
McKinnon’s return would be a natural fit as many current cast members—such as Michael Che, Colin Jost, Heidi Gardner, and Bowen Yang—worked alongside her during her run. The SNL team has also welcomed new faces this season, including Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline, following the departure of cast members Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney, and Chloe Troast.
With the excitement of SNL’s 50th season building, the possibility of McKinnon’s return adds an extra layer of anticipation for fans.
