Love and Complications in 9-1-1: Lone Star
Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani explains the decision to introduce a new obstacle in the relationship between Gina Torres and D.B. Woodside’s characters in 9-1-1: Lone Star. While romance is blossoming, it’s complicated by the presence of an ex-wife.
In Season 5, Episode 2 of the Fox drama, Tommy (played by Gina Torres) proposes to Pastor Trevor (played by D.B. Woodside). However, complications arise when Tommy learns that Trevor’s ex-wife has insisted on meeting and approving any woman who might become a stepmother to their daughter. Although Tommy is willing to accommodate the ex-wife’s request, she draws the line when it comes to anyone judging her own twin daughters.
Rashad Raisani, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, shared insights on this plot twist. He emphasized that they had always planned for Trevor’s ex to make an appearance because of Trevor’s unique situation—a pastor who’s divorced and has moved on from a previous life. Raisani found this scenario intriguing, particularly in exploring the question of who Trevor’s ex-wife is and what their shared history looks like. He noted that Trevor’s daughter, Melody, also adds complexity to the story, as previous episodes have shown her as both sweet and devious, creating rich narrative possibilities for her mother’s introduction.
Raisani also spoke about the decision to include the proposal scene, pointing out the “wonderful chemistry” between Torres and Woodside, actors who have worked together on multiple projects in the past. He described the proposal as one of the most charming moments they’ve written but was keen to ensure that the storyline didn’t become too straightforward. They wanted to capture the inherent awkwardness of the situation.
He also expressed the hope that viewers would understand both sides of the conflict in the upcoming episodes, acknowledging that it’s a very relatable situation for many. Raisani explained that as a parent, he empathizes with the desire to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for one’s child when an ex-spouse moves on, but he also understands the frustration Tommy feels at being judged by someone from her partner’s past. “It’s a very universal, human sort of situation,” he concluded.
