Charles Kelley Opens Up About His Journey to Sobriety
Charles Kelley of Lady A recently opened up about his path to sobriety in the Nov. 15 episode of the Hulu docuseries It’s All Country. The 43-year-old country artist reflected on how alcohol had taken a toll on his marriage to Cassie McConnell Kelley and his career.
“Success is a double-edged sword,” Kelley shared in the series. “Once you’ve experienced it, it can feel like a drug. There’s a lot of doubt and ego to manage, and I had to face those issues in treatment.”
In 2022, Lady A postponed their Request Line Tour for a year to allow Kelley to enter a rehabilitation facility in Utah. The band, including Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, chose to be transparent with fans about the decision. “Dave and Hillary were incredible friends during this time,” Kelley said. “I felt like I was given a second chance at my career and my marriage.”
Kelley revealed that his wife, Cassie, who is also 41, had considered meeting with a divorce attorney before he sought help. During a family therapy session at the rehab center, Cassie was initially upset by the realization that recovery required work from everyone involved. “It affects the whole family system,” she later said. “I had to choose to do the work to heal, regardless of whether our marriage survived or not.”
Lady A shared their support for Kelley in an Instagram post at the time, emphasizing that their bond as a band is also a family connection. Kelley has since described his sobriety as the “best decision” of his life.
“I didn’t set out to share my story, but I realize how common these struggles are,” he said. “At this stage of my life and career, I hope to offer encouragement to others, even in small ways.”
