Strictly Come Dancing to Make History with First Ever Traditional Bollywood Dance

Strictly Come Dancing is set to make history this week with a brand new dance style that has never been featured in the show’s 20-year history. Despite facing some scandals and controversies recently, the popular family series is back on BBC with a fresh lineup of celebrities ready to showcase their talents.

While this season has stayed fairly traditional in terms of music choices – with some minor controversy surrounding Paul Merson’s “Vindaloo” performance – the show is now venturing into new territory. TV medic Dr. Punam Krishan, who is paired with professional dancer Gorka Márquez, gave fans a preview of their upcoming performance during Thursday’s episode of the spin-off show, It Takes Two.

The duo will perform a traditional Bollywood dance during Movie Week, in honor of Dr. Krishan’s South Asian heritage. Márquez hinted during the previous week’s results show that it would be a first for the program.

Their routine will be set to “Bhole Chudiye” from the popular Bollywood film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, a beloved classic in Indian cinema. Dr. Krishan compared the movie to Love Actually, explaining that it’s about families coming together, filled with love stories and reunions, and features many iconic Bollywood actors and actresses. She shared how much the movie means to her, saying she’s watched it countless times with her family.

Last year, Márquez was partnered with BBC radio presenter Nikita Kanda, who had hoped to showcase her South Asian heritage before being eliminated. Dr. Krishan reflected on the significance of this moment for representation in mainstream media. She said that growing up, she never thought she’d see Bollywood on what she called “normal” TV. She hopes that this performance will resonate not just with the South Asian community but with anyone who seeks to see something different and feel included.

She emphasized the importance of representation, expressing how meaningful the performance will be for her and her family, especially her grandmother in India. While Strictly has featured Bollywood-inspired routines before, such as Will Young and Karen Clifton’s performance to Nicole Scherzinger’s “Jai Ho”, this will mark the first time that a traditional Bollywood dance is performed by the show’s celebrity contestants.
