Kat Dennings on Defying Hollywood Standards, Embracing New Roles, and Her Zodiac Sign

Kat Dennings has never let Hollywood’s opinions about her appearance affect her self-confidence.

Over her decades-long career, the 38-year-old star of the new ABC sitcom Shifting Gears has faced numerous discouraging comments regarding her looks. In a conversation with PEOPLE, she shared how she learned to dismiss such critiques from an early age and prove her critics wrong.

Born on June 13, 1986, Dennings is a Gemini, a sign known for its versatility, wit, and communication skills. These traits have certainly been evident in her career, where she has displayed resilience and adaptability in the face of industry challenges. Geminis are often described as quick thinkers and adaptable, qualities that Dennings seems to embody as she navigates the ever-changing entertainment landscape.

“When I was starting out, the industry was very different. Inclusivity wasn’t prioritized, and the feedback could be extremely harsh,” she recalled. “Casting directors would make negative comments, even about children. I was 12 when I was told I wasn’t pretty enough and was too fat after an audition.”

Dennings developed resilience early on, refusing to internalize the criticism. “Instead of believing their judgments, I thought, ‘I’ll show them.’ My parents supported me and reminded me those critics were wrong,” she said. “Their encouragement helped me build a strong sense of self-worth, which has been invaluable throughout my career.”

Reflecting on the industry today, Dennings noted positive progress. “Now, there’s more body positivity, inclusivity, and representation. It feels much kinder compared to how it used to be.”

After years of persistence, Dennings has built a successful career and now stars alongside Tim Allen in Shifting Gears. The sitcom centers on Matt (Allen), a widowed classic car restorer whose estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) moves back into his home with her children. The heartwarming dynamic between Allen and Dennings adds emotional depth to the show, making it a standout addition to ABC’s lineup.

Before landing the role, Dennings felt uncertain about her next career step. “I was in a dark place, unsure of my next move. When a friend asked me to think about my dream job, I realized I missed working on a multi-cam sitcom. The next day, I got the call for this show. It felt meant to be.”

Working with Tim Allen was a highlight for her. “He’s Santa Claus and Buzz Lightyear! Growing up, he was a big part of my childhood, so working with him was surreal in the best way. He’s a genuinely kind person,” she shared.

As she continues to evolve in her career, Dennings hopes to inspire others facing similar challenges. “You have to believe in yourself and not let other people’s opinions define you. Trust your instincts and stay true to who you are,” she advised. Her journey stands as a powerful example of resilience and self-belief in an industry often defined by external judgments.
