Christina Applegate Opens Up About the Pressure That Led to Her Only Plastic Surgery at Age 27
Christina Applegate has always been open about her personal struggles, including living with multiple sclerosis. Recently, she revealed on the podcast MeSsy, which she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, the pressure that led her to undergo plastic surgery—the only one she’s ever had.
Applegate recounted an incident from years ago when a director commented on her appearance, stating, “We had to spend a lot of money to fix that… the studio was really upset.” She disclosed that the first and only time she had plastic surgery was at 27, to remove the bags under her eyes.
She explained that a producer, a well-known figure in the industry, suggested the surgery due to difficulties lighting her eyes on set. “I was on a show, and one of the producers, [a] very famous [person] who did a very famous show as well, said, ‘Hey, we’re having a lot of trouble lighting under your eyes. The bags under your eyes are so big… I suggest you get them removed.’ And you know what? I did. At 27 years old,” Applegate said.
Applegate noted the lasting impact of such comments, emphasizing how they plant seeds of shame. She mentioned that the bags under her eyes were hereditary, a feature she shares with her father. During the conversation, Applegate and Sigler discussed the broader issue of shame and the importance of recognizing our intrinsic value, regardless of appearance.
When Applegate was 27, she was beginning her role in the series Jesse, although she did not specify which show she was referring to in the podcast. Prior to Jesse, she starred in Married… with Children from 1987 to 1997.
