Sarah Catherine Hook Embraces Reimagining Cruel Intentions for a New Generation

More than 25 years after Cruel Intentions made waves with its daring and provocative storyline, the tale is being reimagined for a new audience in a Prime Video series. While the new cast pays homage to the original, they acknowledge that the stars of the 1999 film might not be rushing to watch.

“I understand if they don’t [watch],” says Sarah Catherine Hook, who steps into Sarah Michelle Gellar’s iconic role as a scheming socialite using her step-brother’s desires to her advantage. “That might be a little weird for them,” she admits, adding with a smile, “We’ll see.”

For Hook, the opportunity to reimagine such a well-loved story is a privilege. “It’s such an honor to be part of this,” she shares. “I’ve loved this movie for so long. My best friend and I watched it together growing up—it was one of our favorites.”

Hook first saw the film in middle school. “I think I was in seventh grade, which was way too young,” she recalls with a laugh. “I watched it with these older, cooler girls, which felt like the perfect introduction. I was just this awkward seventh grader with braces, going through puberty, and it left a big impression.”

Despite the legacy of the original, Hook says the reboot team encouraged individuality. “The showrunners gave us creative freedom and didn’t want us to simply replicate what had already been done. That made a huge difference,” she explains. “Honestly, I was just so excited to be part of it because I’ve loved it for so long.”

Recreating the intense and twisted chemistry between Gellar and Ryan Phillippe’s characters as Kathryn and Sebastian was a highlight for Hook, who stars alongside Zac Burgess as her step-brother, Lucien. “It’s so deliciously messed up,” she says. “There’s something thrilling about diving into a story like this—it’s unlike anything else we get to do as actors.”

Looking ahead, Hook hopes the series continues and even dreams of a crossover with the original cast. “If we get more seasons, it would be amazing to see some of the original stars make cameos,” she says. “That would be so, so great.”

In the meantime, Hook is savoring the chance to bring a fresh perspective to a beloved classic, blending nostalgia with a modern twist.
