First Look at Michelle De Swarte’s New BBC Comedy-Drama ‘Spent’

Here are the first images from the new BBC comedy-drama “Spent,” written by and starring Michelle De Swarte. The series draws inspiration from De Swarte’s experiences in the modeling industry. She plays Mia, a former international catwalk model who finds herself broke and homeless in Brixton, South London.

The images also feature Matt King from “Peep Show” as Mia’s agent Mills, and stand-up comedian Jamali Maddix as a character named Marc. The BBC describes Mia as a woman who, despite her modest beginnings, has grown accustomed to, and possibly addicted to, the finer things in life. However, these lifestyle choices don’t hold much value when you’re nearing 40 and constantly couch surfing. Despite her high standards and impeccable skincare routine, Mia is now living on the edge of poverty, though she refuses to acknowledge it to anyone, including herself.

“Spent” is produced by Various Artists Ltd and consists of six episodes set to premiere this summer on BBC Two and iPlayer. The series also stars Juliette Cowan, Amanda Wilkin, Karl Collins, Eleanor Nawal, and Rachel Ofori.

Michelle De Swarte, born in South London, was discovered at 19 while working at Segaworld in the Trocadero Centre at Piccadilly Circus. She moved to New York, modeling for brands like Burberry, Missoni, Tommy Hilfiger, and Cartier, and appeared in fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Italian Vanity Fair, i-D, and V Magazine. Her runway career ended abruptly after she fell twice on the Gucci runway. Returning to London, she transitioned into stand-up comedy and acting, appearing regularly in Katherine Ryan’s Netflix series “The Duchess” and landing her first leading role in Sky/HBO’s “The Baby.”
