Rediscovered Caravaggio Masterpiece ‘Ecce Homo’ Makes Debut at Madrid’s Prado Museum
Madrid’s Prado Museum recently revealed a painting by Italian baroque master Caravaggio, titled “Ecce Homo” (Behold the Man), marking its public debut after being rediscovered in what the museum hails as a monumental moment in art history.
The painting had been lost since the 19th century until it resurfaced three years ago. Initially attributed to an unknown Spanish artist, it was on the brink of being auctioned in Spain at a fraction of its true worth before its true identity was recognized.
Caravaggio, renowned for his use of chiaroscuro lighting, created the piece between 1605 and 1609, depicting a suffering Jesus Christ wearing a crown of thorns. Believed to have once been owned by King Philip IV of Spain, the artwork showcases Caravaggio’s mastery and captures the subtleties of his style.
David Garcia Cueto, head of the department of pre-1800 Italian and French painting at Madrid’s El Prado Museum, expressed excitement about the opportunity to fully appreciate Caravaggio’s work and its intricate beauty.
The painting’s new owner, an international art collector based in Spain, has arranged for its display at the museum until October, with the possibility of a permanent showcase. Spain intervened in the painting’s auction in 2021 amid suggestions that it could be a genuine Caravaggio rather than the work of a lesser-known contemporary, Jose de Ribera.
Art history professor Maria Cristina Terzaghi traced the painting’s provenance back to the family of 19th-century politician Evaristo Perez de Castro, confirming its authenticity as a Caravaggio masterpiece.
