Robert Downey Jr. Replaces Kang as Doctor Doom in MCU

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has resolved the fate of Kang the Conqueror for the remainder of The Multiverse Saga. As Marvel Studios moves closer to their upcoming Avengers films, they’ve had to address the situation regarding Jonathan Majors, who was initially cast as Kang but was dismissed following a guilty verdict in his trial.

During Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, speculation was high about Kang’s future in the MCU. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be stepping in to play Doctor Doom, rather than reprising his role as Iron Man. This decision means Doctor Doom, not Kang, will be the central antagonist in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, effectively ending Kang’s storyline in the MCU.

The reaction to Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as a new character has been mixed, but the idea of him portraying Doctor Doom is intriguing. Unlike Kang, who has appeared in several Multiverse Saga projects but failed to connect with audiences as strongly as Thanos did during The Infinity Saga, Doctor Doom, especially portrayed by Downey Jr., could provide a deeper emotional impact. The prospect of the Avengers facing a villain resembling Tony Stark, who sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame, adds a compelling layer of drama. This could be particularly poignant if characters close to Stark, such as Thor, War Machine, or Spider-Man, are involved in the storyline, potentially making Avengers: Doomsday a deeply tragic narrative.

As the MCU heads toward a reported soft reboot with Avengers: Secret Wars, having Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom as the ultimate antagonist of this era seems fitting. There are numerous possibilities for this character, given his extensive lore in Marvel Comics. Fans can look forward to more updates on this plotline as Marvel Studios continues to develop their future projects.

Robert Downey Jr. Roasts Chris Hemsworth at Walk of Fame Ceremony

At a recent event honoring Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth with a star on the Walk of Fame, his longtime Avengers co-star Robert Downey Jr. took the opportunity to lovingly roast him. Downey Jr. asked their Marvel colleagues Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Evans to describe Hemsworth in three words, leading to humorous responses that had the audience laughing.

Jeremy Renner humorously described Hemsworth as “absurdly, annoyingly amazing,” while Mark Ruffalo affectionately referred to him as a “friend from work.” Scarlett Johansson captured Hemsworth’s essence with the phrase “sensitive leading lady.”

In a more serious moment, Downey Jr. praised Hemsworth as one of the most remarkable people he knows. Hemsworth received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame just a day before the premiere of his latest film, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Downey Jr. expressed his excitement for the movie, predicting it to be a highlight of 2024.

During his speech, Downey Jr. humorously claimed credit for writing his comments himself, highlighting his insights and brilliance. He went on to praise Hemsworth’s charisma beyond his iconic roles, describing him as a “remarkable human being” with a “true wit and depth of soul.” Downey Jr. concluded by expressing his sincere pleasure in knowing Hemsworth and praised him for keeping Hollywood “on our toes” with his authenticity.
