USA vs Canada Highlights – ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024
Aaron Jones delivered an extraordinary performance, scoring an unbeaten 94 from just 40 balls, leading Team USA to a seven-wicket victory over their historic rivals, Canada, in the opening match of the T20 World Cup.
The United States, co-hosting the event, faced significant pressure when Canada set a formidable target of 194-5. The challenge intensified when the U.S. lost a wicket on the second ball of their innings. This required the United States to surpass their previous highest run chase in a T20 international, which was 169.
Despite the daunting task, Team USA reached the target comfortably with 14 balls to spare, as Jones secured the win with his 10th six. The team was in a precarious position when captain Monank Patel was dismissed at 66-2 in the 7th over. At one point, the required run rate surged to over 12 runs per over.
Jones, who had struggled for form in recent matches and entered this game with a strike rate of 100, stunned everyone by hitting the fastest T20 half-century for the USA. He achieved this milestone in just 22 balls, featuring six sixes and maintaining a strike rate of 227.
Remarkably, at least two of his powerful hits exceeded 100 meters (328 feet), and they would have been home runs at Grand Prairie Stadium when it was used as a baseball venue.
Jones’s incredible innings shifted the momentum back to the United States, putting immense pressure on Canada. This pressure was evident when Jeremy Gordon bowled the 14th over, which included wides and no balls, resulting in 33 runs from 11 balls.
Jones formed a match-winning partnership of 131 runs for the third wicket with Andres Gous, who scored 65 from 46 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. Although Gous was dismissed just before the end, the crowd’s chants of “USA, USA” echoed around the stadium as Team USA celebrated their memorable victory.
