Francis Lawrence’s Adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk Gains Momentum with Potential Leads

It’s been over six months since we reported that Francis Lawrence, director of The Hunger Games, would helm an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk. Now, following the announcement of Lawrence directing the sequel to Ballad of Songbirds And Snakes, titled Sunrise On The Reaping, more details about his plans for The Long Walk have emerged. According to Deadline, Cooper Hoffman, known for Licorice Pizza, and David Jonsson, a breakout star from Rye Lane, are in talks to lead Lionsgate’s long-awaited adaptation.

Originally published in 1979 under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Long Walk is set in a dystopian world where 100 teenage boys, including sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty, participate in an annual competition. The rules are simple but brutal: the boys must maintain a speed above 4 miles per hour; receiving three warnings in an hour results in being shot; and the last boy standing wins whatever he desires for the rest of his life. The premise, reminiscent of The Hunger Games and Squid Game, fits well within Lawrence’s expertise in the genre.

The adaptation of The Long Walk has been in development for years, with filmmakers like George A. Romero, Frank Darabont, and André Øvredal previously attached. Although there is no confirmed start date for shooting or release, the involvement of Lawrence and the potential casting of Hoffman and Jonsson offer hope that The Long Walk will soon become a reality. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to seeing Jonsson in Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, set to be released on August 16.
