Jude Law Reflects on Regretting His Role in Alfie and Career Missteps

Jude Law recently reflected on a film role from the early 2000s that he regrets accepting. The actor, known for his Oscar-nominated performances in The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain, admitted in a recent interview that he shouldn’t have taken the role in Alfie (2004).

In the film, a remake of the 1966 classic, Law played a charming womanizer and limo driver, but the movie flopped at the box office and was poorly received by critics and audiences alike. Speaking with GQ, Law explained that at the time, he was in a strong career position following his Oscar nomination for Cold Mountain, but choosing Alfie was a mistake.

“I thought the film would be grittier and more meaningful,” he said. “But it felt too light and cheesy.” Law also regretted that the film had been made with a high budget, noting he was likely paid too much and didn’t realize the full weight of that at the time. He added, “I kicked myself for leaning into the heartthrob role, and it didn’t work.”

The poor reception of Alfie shook his confidence. He admitted, “Once you have a couple of misfires, people’s attention shifts elsewhere, and you start wondering how to get it back.”

Despite this, Law went on to star in the romantic comedy The Holiday (2006), which became one of his most beloved roles, showing that he hadn’t completely soured on romcoms.

John Krasinski Shares Emily Blunt’s Reaction to Being Named ‘Sexiest Man Alive’

John Krasinski recently shared his wife Emily Blunt’s reaction after he was named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2024. The actor, known for his roles in The Office, Jack Ryan, and A Quiet Place, took the title from last year’s honoree, Patrick Dempsey. Reflecting on the moment he found out, Krasinski admitted to People magazine that he was initially so stunned he experienced an “immediate blackout” and thought he might be getting pranked.

“This isn’t exactly what I expect to wake up to,” he joked. “I never think, ‘Is today the day I’ll be named Sexiest Man Alive?’ but here we are!”

Krasinski went on to share that his wife, Emily Blunt, was thrilled by the news, playfully suggesting that she’d use the magazine cover as wallpaper. Krasinski quipped, “If we got that on camera, that’s basically a binding contract. My kids will love it—it won’t be weird at all!”

Despite the honor, he suspects it may mean more chores at home rather than goodwill. He laughed, “Blunt’ll probably say, ‘Alright, now you’ve got to earn that title here at home.’”

In a humorous side note, Krasinski admitted that he let the news slip to Matt Damon at his birthday party. When Damon asked why he was late, Krasinski replied with a smile, “People’s Sexiest!”

Actress Chanel Maya Banks Found Safe, Family Expresses Doubts

Los Angeles actress Chanel Maya Banks, reported missing since Oct. 30, has been located and is safe, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, as reported by ABC News. Banks, known for roles in shows like Gossip Girl and Blue Bloods, was confirmed unharmed, and the LAPD indicated there was no suspicion of foul play. However, some family members remain doubtful.

Messages posted on social media under Banks’ name stated she was not missing and alleged familial abuse, adding that she left voluntarily to “escape my cage.” Despite this, Banks’ cousin Danielle-Tori Singh expressed skepticism, labeling the news as “fake” and continuing to distribute missing person flyers.

Earlier, Singh reported a tip had led Texas authorities to a woman who identified herself as Banks. Although police provided body camera footage, Singh asserted that the individual did not resemble Banks as seen in a recent FaceTime call.

Banks’ family became increasingly concerned after not hearing from her since late October, with relatives conducting welfare checks and finding her belongings and pet left behind in her home. Singh, who traveled from Toronto to aid in the search, noted that the lack of communication was unusual, as Banks regularly kept in touch. Singh described Banks as “more like a big sister” and emphasized that going several days without contact raised serious concern.

A statement from Banks’ Instagram account contradicted Singh’s statements, claiming, “I have not spoken to Danielle in over 15 years much less every day or 48 hours as they’ve perjured.” Singh, who had also mentioned a lack of cooperation from Banks’ husband, said he had been removing missing-person flyers and declined to assist the family or authorities.

According to Banks’ IMDb profile, she has acted under the name Chanel Farrell and has appeared in shows like Blue Bloods, Twelve, and Gossip Girl. Singh shared that Banks had shifted focus from acting to writing in recent years, and she remained convinced that “something is not right.”

GloRilla Chooses Celibacy and Focuses on Her Future

GloRilla is setting her sights on a clear path for her future. Over the weekend, the 25-year-old rapper tweeted that she’s single and “celibate until God sends [her] husband,” with heart-hands and hug emojis.

Previously, GloRilla sparked rumors linking her to NBA star and fellow rapper Damian Lillard, known as Dame D.O.L.L.A., after expressing interest in him following their meeting during All-Star Weekend. But in October, Lillard laughed off the rumors, saying he keeps his private life out of the spotlight and respects her as an artist.

Fresh off her debut album Glorious, released on October 11, GloRilla is making waves. The album, which includes collaborations with Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, T-Pain, and more, debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, featuring the hit single “TGIF” that peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ironically, GloRilla’s celibacy tweet comes shortly after she pranked fans with a fake pregnancy on social media, wearing a faux baby bump in photos that quickly had her friends like Latto and Muni Long calling out the joke.

Rey Skywalker: The Future of Star Wars and the Battle for the Next Trilogy

Rey Skywalker: The Future of Star Wars and the Battle for the Next Trilogy

Forget the Death Star; the real focus in Star Wars now is Rey Skywalker. Since Lucasfilm announced that Simon Kinberg would develop a new Star Wars trilogy, debate has centered on whether this could continue the iconic Skywalker Saga, exploring themes tied to Luke, Darth Vader, and the legacy established by George Lucas in 1977.

The planned trilogy may intersect with an upcoming Rey-focused standalone film, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, marking a significant push for the character. Despite mixed reception for The Rise of Skywalker, Rey remains a central asset for Lucasfilm, potentially appearing in multiple new films. According to insiders, Rey’s story is critical, given her post-Lucas creation and enduring screen presence, making her one of the franchise’s few remaining cinematic assets.

Lucasfilm’s movie development process is unique in Hollywood, with multiple projects overlapping in characters and timelines, creating a domino effect where one film’s release could influence others. Projects include Taika Waititi’s upcoming film, Shawn Levy’s project, and Donald Glover’s Lando feature. The franchise’s television branch, however, has greater creative flexibility, giving rise to series like Andor and The Mandalorian.

Ultimately, Lucasfilm faces a fundamental decision: continue the Skywalker Saga, or pivot into new stories. As one source put it, they’re essentially being asked to craft “the new New Testament” for Star Wars, as they navigate preserving nostalgia while finding fresh stories.

Rapper Lil Durk Arrested on Murder-for-Hire Charge

Rapper Lil Durk was reportedly arrested in Florida on Thursday on a murder-for-hire charge, according to U.S. Marshals and Broward County booking records. The 32-year-old artist, legally named Durk Devontay Banks, is being held without bail.

The arrest follows a federal indictment in California accusing five members of Lil Durk’s Only the Family (OTF) collective of involvement in a revenge-related murder-for-hire. The indictment identifies suspects Kavon London Grant (“Cuz” or “Vonnie”), Deandre Dontrell Wilson (“DeDe”), Asa Houston (“Boogie”), Keith Jones (“Flacka”), and David Brian Lindsey (“Browneyez”) as part of a plot to kill a man referred to as T.B., allegedly in response to the death of an OTF member, possibly Dayvon Daquan Bennett, also known as King Von.

According to court documents, the defendants are accused of stalking T.B. in Los Angeles in 2022, leading to a botched attack where a passenger, identified as S.R., was killed. The suspects allegedly used various interstate resources, such as cars, phones, and firearms, in carrying out their plan, including a fully automatic firearm.

The indictment includes charges of conspiracy, use of interstate facilities to commit murder-for-hire, and firearm-related offenses.

Nicole Kidman Teases New AMC Ad and Reflects on Its Impact

Nicole Kidman Teases New AMC Ad and Reflects on Its Impact

Nicole Kidman is hinting at the return of her popular AMC ad, which originally debuted in September 2021. In an interview with E! News’ Will Marfuggi on Oct. 23 at the Los Angeles premiere of Lioness season two, the 57-year-old actress teased the possibility of another iconic theater ad. When asked about it, she replied, “Maybe, yes,” and added, “You need to talk to Adam [Aron, CEO of AMC Theaters].”

Kidman, who shares two daughters with husband Keith Urban and two older children with ex-husband Tom Cruise, confirmed that a new ad is in progress. She playfully referenced her role in Practical Magic, saying, “We’re in the making… There’s things brewing.”

The original AMC ad gained significant attention, even inspiring a parody on Saturday Night Live. Kidman expressed her appreciation for its success, telling E! News in April, “I’m so glad that they [fans] love them, because it means that they go to the theater.”

Kidman herself enjoys going to the movies, often visiting her local AMC while filming Lioness season two in Texas. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Oct. 24, she revealed that she would sneak into the theater and hide her face when the ad played.

Even other celebrities have joined in on the fun. During the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony in April, Morgan Freeman spoofed the ad while praising Kidman, humorously stating, “Nicole Kidman, she makes movies better.”

Stay tuned to see more of Kidman’s iconic roles over the years!

Tears For Fears Release Concert Film and New Music

Tears For Fears Release Concert Film and New Music

Tears For Fears recently expressed mixed feelings about their upcoming concert film, “Tears For Fears Live (A Tipping Point Film),” which premieres in select cinemas on October 24 and 26. In an interview, Curt Smith humorously noted, “There are always things you would change,” while bandmate Roland Orzabal joked about his pants, saying, “I should have bought some flares.”

The film showcases performances from their concert in Franklin, Tennessee, and coincides with the release of their first official live album, “Songs For A Nervous Planet.” Orzabal clarified that previous live albums were put together by their record label without their input. This time, they have full control over their music.

The concert features both classic hits like “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and new tracks from their recent album, “The Tipping Point,” released in February 2022. Orzabal expressed surprise at the album’s global success, noting that the new songs resonate more powerfully in a live setting. He remarked, “We’d become a slightly different band… It’s a completely different band than the one that was playing ‘Massey Hall’ or ‘Going to California.'”

Smith emphasized that the film and album aim to demonstrate their capabilities as a live band, especially since many fans have never seen them perform. He reflected on being labeled a synth duo despite both members being guitarists, highlighting the importance of showcasing their live performances.

In addition to live recordings, the album includes four new songs that they didn’t consider bonus tracks, each with its own significance. “Say Goodbye To Mum And Dad” stands out as a cheerful anthem, while “Astronaut” explores themes of alienation. Orzabal wrote “The Girl That I Call Home” for his new wife, Emily, who also inspired the psychedelic track “Emily Said.”

The new music serves as an optimistic reflection of their current state, contrasting with the themes of pain in “The Tipping Point,” which was influenced by Orzabal’s personal loss. He noted that they are no longer confined to comparisons with other bands, allowing them the freedom to explore their creativity.

As Orzabal humorously concluded, his immediate goal is to find a good pair of trousers, underscoring their lighthearted approach as they continue to create music after more than 40 years in the industry.

Horror Fans Rejoice: Smile 2 Hits Theaters and Sets the Stage for a Franchise

Horror Fans Rejoice: Smile 2 Hits Theaters and Sets the Stage for a Franchise

Horror movie fans have a reason to smile. Last week, director Parker Finn returned to theaters with a follow-up to his hit thriller Smile. The original film gained attention thanks to a clever marketing campaign, where eerie photo bombers appeared behind home plate at televised baseball games and even on the Today show. The strategy paid off, with the first film raking in over $200 million at the box office. Now, Smile 2 is aiming to surpass expectations, leaving Paramount’s executives grinning with anticipation.

In the sequel, pop star Skye Riley (played by Naomi Scott) is haunted by a sinister curse that causes hallucinations, driving its victims to suicide. The cast also includes Rosemarie DeWitt as Skye’s mother, Lukas Gage as her drug dealer, and Ray Nicholson as her deceased ex-boyfriend. Nicholson, son of legendary actor Jack Nicholson, channels his father’s famous “Kubrick Stare” in several scenes.

With Smile 2 off to a strong start in theaters, it seems poised to become a major horror franchise, making a third installment likely. For those who haven’t seen the original, it’s available to rent on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+, and Apple TV+.

As for Smile 2, it premiered on October 18 and is currently only available in theaters. By the end of the year, though, it will likely be available to rent or buy on streaming platforms, eventually becoming exclusive to Paramount+. By that time, fans might already be looking forward to the next chapter in the series.

Sandy Powell’s Costumes Shine at SCAD FASH

Sandy Powell’s Costumes Shine at SCAD FASH

Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell’s work is being celebrated at SCAD FASH through March 16, 2024, in her debut exhibition, Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film. The display honors Powell’s nearly 40-year career with more than 70 costumes from iconic films like Velvet Goldmine, The Wolf of Wall Street, Carol, and many others. Powell, a legend in her field, has won three Academy Awards for Shakespeare in Love, The Aviator, and The Young Victoria, and has become known for her bold, innovative approach to costume design.

The exhibit’s setup is a cinematic experience. Each costume is placed in black boxes, lit from below, creating the atmosphere of a theater screening. The first piece in the exhibit is from Caravaggio (1986), Powell’s first feature film collaboration with filmmaker Derek Jarman. Reflecting on her time on that set, Powell said, “I didn’t know how to make films. I didn’t know what we were doing.” This film, however, was a critical moment in her career. The collaborative nature of the production, where artists helped across departments, had a lasting influence on her approach to filmmaking.

After Caravaggio, the exhibit moves into Orlando (1992), Powell’s first Oscar-nominated work and another collaboration with actress Tilda Swinton, who also made her debut in Caravaggio. SCAD Director of Fashion Exhibitions Rafael Gomes noted that Swinton may be the most represented actor in the exhibit, but Powell has built a network of long-term collaborators, including directors like Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes, and actors such as Cate Blanchett and Julianne Moore.

Powell’s working style is meticulous, and she prefers collaborating with directors who have a strong visual focus. When she begins a project, she first breaks down the script before discussing the director’s vision. The process varies: for example, Scorsese often sends books and films for her to study, as was the case on Gangs of New York, where a specific detail of a striped collar from a French film needed to be incorporated into a character’s look. “I didn’t know that [movie],” she said, laughing. “The next day I get sent the film and have to watch the entire thing to find the collar.”

Her relationships with filmmakers are built on trust. When working on Carol (2015), Powell emphasized how crucial it was to get the titular character’s fur coat just right. After screen testing different colors, director Todd Haynes trusted Powell’s judgment to go with a lighter color coat that looked better on Blanchett, even though it was more difficult to make. The coat seen in the exhibit is a recreation, as the original was fragile after filming; its restoration process weakened the stitching, causing it to split regularly during production.

Powell’s creativity shines, even under budget constraints. For The Favourite (2018), her budget was limited, which led to inventive solutions, like using inexpensive materials to replicate period details. “Because we stripped away all the detail and reduced the color palette, it didn’t get in the way of the dialogue,” Powell said. “If I’d done that the way expected for that period, with costumes as grand as the Elizabethan ones, it would have been too much.”

The exhibit beautifully encapsulates Powell’s adaptability and talent, celebrating her legacy of bringing unforgettable characters to life through costume.
