This experience prompted Janelle to recall her own unconventional wedding to Kody.

“I didn’t have a traditional wedding dress,” Janelle shared in a confessional. “When Kody and I got married, my family was very unhappy with my choice to join the faith. Most of them weren’t speaking to me at the time.” She added that she wore a simple green dress to the wedding.

Janelle revealed that her mother was the only family member present at the ceremony, though under unique circumstances. “My mom came initially to ‘save me’ from the polygamist lifestyle, but she ended up marrying Kody’s dad three months before we got married. So, she was fine with it, but the rest of my family wasn’t supportive and didn’t attend.”

Janelle was spiritually married to Kody from 1993 to 2022. Before that, she was married to Adam Barber, the brother of Kody’s first wife, Meri Brown, from 1988 to 1990. Reflecting on her future, Janelle said, “If I get married again, I probably won’t wear a big white dress. I’ll likely keep it simple—maybe even get married on a mountain in my jeans.”

The episode also featured Meri Brown reflecting on her past relationship with Kody. At lunch with friends, she discussed her lingering feelings about their marriage, which officially ended in January 2023 after their church recognized its termination. Meri’s friends encouraged her to embrace the positive aspects of her time with Kody while looking ahead.

In her confessional, Meri said, “It was a good time with him, but now it’s over, and I feel like I’m truly moving forward. Eventually, I’ll find someone new, and who knows what the future holds.”

Season 3 of The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On premiered on Netflix on December 4, and only four episodes in, viewers have already witnessed a dramatic turn of events involving two couples. Early in episode 4, couples Chanel and Micah, as well as Dave and Vanessa, unexpectedly left the experiment without explanation.

Producers revealed via a title card that the four had secretly met off-camera earlier that day. Surveillance footage later captured them packing their belongings and leaving the apartments. As the show aired clips of their departures, Nick and Mariah, who were paired with Vanessa and Micah, respectively, expressed their disappointment in confessionals. Dave and Chanel’s exits meant both Nick and Mariah were left to continue the experience alone. Another title card clarified the situation, stating, “Dave, Vanessa, Micah, and Chanel quickly departed, abruptly ending their experience.”

Chris Coelen, the show’s creator, spoke to PEOPLE about the unexpected exit and its ripple effects on the season. Coelen explained that while the premise of the show is to tackle the relatable dilemma of whether or not to get married, the unpredictable nature of human emotions often leads to unexpected outcomes. He noted that while previous seasons had seen couples leave prematurely, the circumstances this time were unique.

“This season, we actually made it through The Choice without anyone leaving, and I thought, ‘Wow, everyone’s committed to the trial marriages.’ But then, this happened. It’s a twist none of us could have foreseen,” Coelen said.

Coelen revealed that while he wasn’t present when the exits occurred, he reached out to the participants to understand their decisions. “Micah did not speak with me, but I had conversations with Dave, Vanessa, and Chanel. They were clear they didn’t want to continue, even if they weren’t entirely sure why. We fully supported their decision,” he shared.

The departures also had a significant emotional impact on Nick and Mariah. Coelen noted that both participants felt abandoned and didn’t have the opportunity to connect fully with their trial marriage partners. While the show offered them options to continue exploring the experiment together, both Nick and Mariah acknowledged they weren’t romantically compatible. Instead, Nick chose to stay and use the experience for personal reflection.

Coelen emphasized the challenges of balancing authenticity with the constraints of reality television. “The trial marriages are designed to simulate real-world marriage dynamics. We don’t film 24/7 or remove phones because that wouldn’t be realistic. The goal is for participants to navigate these situations as they would in real life,” he explained.

Reflecting on the broader implications of the couples’ decisions, Coelen acknowledged the unpredictable nature of human emotions and relationships. “People often have expectations about how things will unfold, but those can shift when they face the reality of the experiment. It’s nerve-wracking, and sometimes they choose not to see it through. That’s life—unpredictable and full of surprises.”
