Exploding Kittens Animated Series Review: Misses the Mark

 

The animated adaptation of Exploding Kittens has garnered mixed reviews, with many criticizing its execution and humor. In the series, God and Beelzebub take on feline forms on Earth, engaging in a cosmic battle while intertwined with the Higgins family’s daily life.

The premise revolves around God’s attempt to understand human struggles after making too many mistakes, including allowing inventions like pumpkin-spice deodorant. He arrives on Earth as a cat, retaining some divine powers but not all, which sets the stage for humorous mishaps and challenges.

The Higgins family, led by former Navy Seal Abbie and her hapless husband Marv, adds to the chaos. Their children, including Travis aiming for internet fame and clever Greta taking after her mother, provide a diverse backdrop for the series’ antics.

Critics argue that the series falls short with its humor, relying on jokes that often miss the mark and fail to resonate. For instance, God-cat’s fascination with pigeons and a peculiar comment comparing them to a Las Vegas buffet or Timothée Chalamet’s appeal, highlight the show’s attempt at quirky humor that doesn’t always land.

Emanuele Marchesi Head of Editorial Content at Sky Studios, highlighted the challenges of producing a Gomorrah prequel during an AVPSummit spotlight session. Marchesi emphasized that the landscape of TV production has dramatically changed since the first Gomorrah movie in 2008 and the series premiere in 2014. He noted that the advent of streaming platforms like Netflix, which launched in Italy around 2014, has led to a significantly more competitive environment for drama production.

Produced by Cattleya, the Gomorrah prequel is set to begin production next year, alongside another prequel of the popular Sky Italia series, Romanzo Criminale – La serie. Marchesi, who took over his current role following Sonia Rovai’s departure for Wildside, pointed out the necessity of offering audiences something new and engaging in today’s crowded TV landscape. He described Gomorrah as a “brand” that remains celebrated more than a decade after its release.

His comments came shortly after Sony international productions head Wayne Garvie remarked on Europe’s challenges in creating TV show franchises. Despite recent decisions by Sky in Germany to stop producing scripted originals like Babylon Berlin, Marchesi reassured that Sky Italia’s approach remains diversified. He cited projects like the Call My Agent – Italia spin-off and Joe Wright’s M, a drama about Benito Mussolini, as examples.

Marchesi also expressed appreciation for Luisa Cotta Ramosino, Netflix’s director of Italian language series, praising her approach to storytelling that resonates with audiences. The AVPSummit, concluding today in southern Italy, featured notable industry figures such as Garvie, Amazon Italy’s scripted boss Davide Nardini, and producer DeVon Franklin.

The trailer for the romantic comedy “A Family Affair” debuted recently, showcasing a star-studded cast including Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King. Produced by the team behind “Anyone but You,” the film follows the story of Zara Ford (Joey King), who uncovers her single mother Brooke’s (Nicole Kidman) affair with her self-absorbed, movie star boss Chris Cole (Zac Efron). Promising a mix of humor and heartfelt moments, the trailer offers a glimpse of the dramatic confrontation between Zara and her mother, with Brooke’s confession about rediscovering feelings after her husband’s death met with a sharp retort from Zara.

The official synopsis describes the film as a tale of unexpected romance leading to comic complications for a young woman, her mother, and her movie star boss as they navigate love, sex, and identity.

Notably, this project marks the third collaboration between Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman, following “The Paperboy” (2012) and the upcoming film “The Butler.” Joey King, renowned for her role in Netflix’s “Kissing Booth” trilogy, takes the lead, while Efron returns to Netflix after his portrayal of Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” and his reality show “Down to Earth.” Nicole Kidman, having previously starred in Netflix’s “The Prom,” adds to the film’s star power.
